At a Girl Scout day camp in Denver, Girl Scouts learned about the challenges facing wild bees and got to work creating bee hotels—small nesting structures designed to provide habitat for solitary bees. Using repurposed materials such as cardboard boxes, paper straws, and toilet paper rolls, the girls researched, designed, and built their own bee shelters before installing them in community gardens and other green spaces. Along the way, they discovered something important: there is a whole world of wild bees beyond the familiar honey bee. (Grist)
