🦗 Crickets create their familiar chirps by rubbing their wings together, and different species have their own distinctive rhythms.
🌿 Katydids fill warm summer evenings with clicks, rattles, and repeated calls. Hidden among leaves and branches, they can be much easier to hear than to see.
🌳 Cicadas provide some of summer’s loudest sounds. Males produce their buzzing and pulsing calls using specialized structures called tymbals on their abdomens.
Your Explore Outdoors Challenge: Find a quiet spot around dusk, close your eyes, and listen for five minutes. How many different insect sounds can you distinguish? Can you tell which ones are crickets, katydids, or cicadas?
