Teenager wins Science Award Removing Plastics from Ocean

Fionn Ferreira, an 18 year-old Irish teenager won Google’s Science Fair by developing a methodology to remove microplastics from the ocean. He tested ferrofluid to see if the microplastic would stick in the oily substance. Ferrofluid controls vibration in speakers and seals off electronic devices from debris. He stirred ferrofluid into a bucket of water, then dumped microplastics into the water. The microplastics mixed and adhered to the ferrofluid. He used a magnet to capture the ferrofluid successfully removing the microplastics from the bucket of water.
