Seahorses at risk

An estimated 600,000 seahorses were poached in Senegal in 2019. Artisanal fishers are fishing without oversight or legally for seahorses. Seahorses are ground into a powder in China for use in rice wine, tea or soup. Seahorses make up an $18 billion in trade. The seahorse trade in not managed, not legal, and not monitored. Seahorses are not being protected by law in Senegal. Without intervention, seahorses will cease to exist.
