Oceans act as the earth’s largest carbon sink. More carbon sinks in the Southern ocean than elsewhere on earth. Diatoms are responsible for 40% of ocean productivity. Diatoms are more sensitive to the ocean acidification caused by the massive amount of ocean sink occuring.
