The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declares giraffes endangered. There are nine subspecies of giraffes, five are declining in numbers. Giraffes are more endangered than gorillas. They have disappeared from five countries in the last 30 years. Urbanization, poaching, illegal hunting, and civil unrest has caused unreputable harm to the giraffe population.
