Chesapeake Bay Islands are Disappearing

Abandoned islands and vanishing communities is becoming the norm in Chesapeake Bay. Since the 1600s, based on some accounts, there are 400 drowned islands. Holland island is now just a few marshlands. Sharps island and Turtle Egg island are now submerged. Great Fox island appears to be next. Once over 400 acres, it now only spans 34 acres. Chesapeake Bay Foundation has halted educational trips to Great Fox as being dangerous. Sea levels are rising, but the land is also sinking. Both are causing Chesapeake Bay islands to disappear. Scientists predict 50 years or less before these islands are underwater.
