🌾 Southeastern Grasslands Feature: America’s Most Overlooked Ecosystem

Grasslands of the Southeast are some of the most diverse—and most threatened—ecosystems in North America. Once stretching across vast portions of the region, these native grasslands now survive in small, scattered pockets that still support incredible biodiversity.

One of the leading efforts to study, restore, and protect these systems is the Southeastern Grasslands Institute, which works to bring attention back to these hidden landscapes and the species that depend on them.

🌿 Southeastern grasslands are home to:

  • Native warm-season grasses like little bluestem and big bluestem
  • Rare wildflowers that support bees, butterflies, and moths
  • Ground-nesting birds that rely on open, sunny habitats
  • Deep-rooted plants that improve soil health and water infiltration

🔥 These ecosystems depend on disturbance—like fire and grazing—to stay healthy and diverse. Without them, forests slowly take over and many grassland species disappear.

🌱 Why it matters:
Restoring southeastern grasslands means restoring pollinators, wildlife habitat, carbon storage, and natural beauty all at once.
