In 2019, the Amazon fires caused 500 jaguars to lose their habitat. Fires have destroyed over 4.9 million acres in Bolivia. Bolivia’s landscape is home to several large cat species including jaguars, puma, ocelot, oncilla, jaguarundi, Geoffrey’s cat, and Pampas cat. Researchers estimate millions of animals have been lost due to the fires. Jaguars with GPS collars have been captured and taken to safety. Fires fragment forests, reducing connectivity between habitats. The intensity of destruction is nearly absolute.
