A new whale species called Berardius minimus has been discovered off the coast of Hokkaido. Six B. minimus were found beached along the beached at Okhotsk Sea. These smaller beaked whales resemble B. bairdii, but several external characteristics differed enough from B. bairdii for scientists to conduct further research to determine if these whales are an undiscovered species or not. B. minimus was studied for morphology, osteology, and molecular phylogeny. This species is the smallest of the beaked whales.
