Explore Outdoors Nature Challenge: Southeast Pollinator Census

🐝🦋 THE SOUTHEAST IS COUNTING—WILL YOU JOIN US? 🌸

This Saturday, August 22, people across six states will be watching the flowers and counting the pollinators that keep our landscapes blooming!

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census, a citizen science project created by the University of Georgia, brings together participants in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi to collect valuable information about pollinator activity.

🌼 Joining the count is easy!

🐝 Count with a local group. Look for a Master Gardener Extension Volunteer or other community counting event near you. Volunteers can help you learn how to recognize the different pollinator groups.

🏡 Or count right at home! Choose a blooming plant with insect activity, watch it for 15 minutes, and record every insect that lands on the flowers. Pollinators are counted in eight categories, including bumble bees, carpenter bees, honey bees, small bees, wasps, flies, butterflies/moths, and other insects. Then submit your results online.

📅 2026 Census Days: August 21 & 22
🌎 Six states. Thousands of citizen scientists. One important mission.

You don’t need to be an entomologist or an experienced gardener. Families, children, gardeners, nature lovers, and first-time citizen scientists can all participate.

Grab a counting sheet, find some flowers, and spend 15 minutes discovering just how much life is buzzing around you!

Download Pollinator Counting Sheet: https://gsepc.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Counting-Sheet.pdf

Use the QR code on the counting sheet to upload your results. UGA scientists will collect all the results from six states. UGA pollinator scientists use Great Southeast Pollinator Census data to better understand pollinator populations, diversity, and activity across the Southeast.

Your participation assists scientists understand pollinator populations! You are contributing to our understanding of our environment.

🐝 Every pollinator counts—and so does every person who counts them.
