You don’t have to see an animal to know it was there! Wildlife leaves clues everywhere—and one of the most exciting clues to discover is a footprint.
This week’s Explore Outdoors Nature Challenge is to head outside and become a nature detective. Look for animal tracks along trails, creek banks, muddy areas, garden beds, or anywhere the ground is soft enough to capture a print.
🔎 When you find a track, investigate!
👣 Count the toes — How many can you see?
📏 Notice the size — Is the print tiny or surprisingly large?
🐾 Look at the shape — Do you see paw pads, claws, hooves, or long toes?
↔️ Follow the trail — How far apart are the tracks? Where was the animal going?
🌿 Search for more clues — Look for feathers, fur, chewed plants, scat, nests, burrows, or scratched bark nearby.
You might discover signs left behind by a raccoon, squirrel, rabbit, deer, opossum, fox, bird, or even a neighborhood dog or cat.
📸 Nature Challenge: Find an animal track, take a photo, and see if you can identify who made it. For an extra challenge, place a ruler or familiar object beside the track for scale before taking your picture.
Remember—observe wildlife signs without disturbing nests, dens, or the animals themselves.
