🏡🦋 Neighbors for Nature: Growing Habitat—and Community—Together 🌿

What happens when neighbors decide that helping wildlife is something they can do together?

At Front Porch communities in California, residents turned concern for declining monarch butterflies into a collaborative conservation effort. It began after a Wesley Palms resident suggested that every community could contribute—whether that meant planting a few milkweed plants in pots or creating an entire monarch garden. Front Porch

The idea grew into the Front Porch Monarch Butterfly Collaborative. Residents began meeting to share ideas, experiences, and what they were learning. At the time of the article, six Front Porch communities had created monarch habitat, with at least four more planning to participate. Wesley Palms and Walnut Village had also established certified Monarch Waystations. Front Porch

But something else happened along the way.

🌱 Residents gardened together.
🐛 They watched caterpillars grow.
🦋 They counted and released butterflies.
🤝 New friendships developed around a shared purpose.
🌼 They learned how native plants could support monarchs while adding beauty and sustainability to their communities. Front Porch

The project even inspired hopes of inviting local schoolchildren to visit the communities and learn from residents—connecting generations through conservation. Front Porch

That’s what Neighbors for Nature is all about. One person may plant a milkweed. Another may add native nectar plants. Someone else may share what they’ve learned. When those individual actions connect, they can become something much bigger.

🌿 NEIGHBORS FOR NATURE CHALLENGE:
Could your neighborhood create its own pollinator corridor? Start a conversation with a neighbor. Plant a native host plant. Share a few native plants. Or work together to create a small habitat garden in a shared community space.

One garden can help. A community of gardens can create habitat. 💚
