As autumn arrives and flowers begin to fade, something important is happening in our gardens and natural areas: seed season has begun!
Those dried flower heads and grasses that may look βfinishedβ are actually entering another valuable stage of their life cycle. Instead of cutting everything back, consider leaving some of those seeds right where they are.
π» Seeds become food. Native plants such as coneflowers, sunflowers, asters, goldenrods, and native grasses produce seeds that can help feed birds and other wildlife through fall and winter.
π¦ Birds become seed dispersers. As birds and other animals eat fruits and seeds, they can carry some of them to new placesβhelping plants spread across the landscape.
π± Seeds become next year’s plants. Some native seeds fall to the ground and spend winter exposed to cold, moist conditions before germinating when conditions are right.
π Standing plants become habitat. Leaving stems and seed heads provides more than food. Standing vegetation can offer cover and overwintering habitat for insects and other small wildlife.
π And the leaves below complete the picture. Fallen leaves create another habitat layer, protecting soil and providing places for countless small organisms to spend the colder months.
πΏ Everything is connected.
Native plants β seeds β wildlife β seed dispersal β new plants β more habitat
This autumn, resist the urge to make every corner of the garden perfectly tidy. Leave some seed heads standing, allow some seeds to fall, and give nature a chance to continue the cycle.
π Habitat Connections Challenge:
Choose one area of your yard or garden to leave standing through winter. Then watch it! Which birds visit the seed heads? What insects shelter among the stems? And when spring arrives, look for new seedlings emerging nearby.
π What looks like the end of the growing season is really the beginning of the next one.
