We talk a lot about providing wildlife with native plants, food, and shelter—but every habitat needs one more essential ingredient:
Water. 💧
Birds need water for drinking and bathing. Bees and butterflies need safe places to sip. Frogs, toads, dragonflies, and countless other creatures depend on water during some or all of their life cycles.
The good news? You don’t need a large pond to make a difference.
🐦 Add a birdbath. Keep the water shallow and provide a textured surface where birds can stand safely.
🐝 Create safe landing spots. Place stones or pebbles so insects can reach the water without becoming trapped.
🦋 Make a butterfly puddling area. A shallow dish containing damp sand or soil can provide moisture and minerals used by some butterflies.
🐸 Consider a small wildlife pond. Even a modest backyard pond can provide habitat for dragonflies, frogs, toads, and other wildlife—especially when surrounded by native vegetation.
🌿 Keep it natural. Native grasses, sedges, wildflowers, shrubs, and trees around water provide places to hide, rest, feed, and escape predators.
And don’t forget maintenance. Refresh small water sources regularly to keep them clean and prevent mosquitoes from completing their aquatic development.
💧 FOOD + WATER + SHELTER + SPACE = HABITAT
Whether it’s a birdbath on a patio, a shallow dish among the flowers, or a backyard wildlife pond, adding water can turn your landscape into an even more valuable refuge.
