How many birds can you discover without ever seeing them?
This weekโs Explore Outdoors Challenge is to take a bird listening walk. Head outside in the early morning or evening, leave the earbuds behind, and let your ears lead the way.
Walk slowly and stop often. Close your eyes for a moment and listen. Can you hear a cheerful song, a sharp call, a woodpecker tapping on a tree, or birds communicating from the treetops? Try to notice how many different voices you hear and which direction each sound is coming from.
๐ฆ Your challenge: Spend 10โ15 minutes listening for birds. Count the different calls and songs you hear, and see how many birds you can identify. Don’t recognize a song? That’s part of the adventureโrecord what you hear or use a bird identification app to help solve the mystery.
Bird listening helps us experience a part of nature that’s easy to overlook. Sometimes you don’t have to see wildlife to know it’s all around you.
๐๐ฟ Slow down. Listen closely. Discover who’s singing in your neighborhood.
